How Liverpool could line up with Cody Gakpo and exciting Jürgen Klopp midfield transfer

Liverpool are on the verge of signing Cody Gakpo, and another player could arrive to bolster the midfield. So how could Jürgen Klopp's team look at the start of 2023?

Liverpool fans were handed a late Christmas present, as news filtered through on Boxing Day about the signing of PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

The Dutch winger was one of the best players in the early stages of the World Cup in Qatar and has been PSV’s star performer in the opening third of the 2022/23 season.

Liverpool moved decisively in the face of growing Manchester United interest, and the deal has now been officially confirmed.

It constitutes an initial £37m ($45m/€42m), with add-ons potentially taking the deal to £44m ($53m/€50m) according to Goal.

While the Gakpo deal has been announced after medical tests were completed, he can feature for Liverpool in the game against Brentford on January 2, and not the Leicester fixture on Friday because his move is only activated on January 1 (Saturday).

The transfer could give Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp an intoxicating level of options for him to choose from when everyone is fit and available. That, though, might take a while.

The decision to move for Gakpo might have been influenced by the setback Luis Díaz suffered.

The Colombian was set to return to Liverpool post-Christmas after his injury against Arsenal in early October, but another injury setback has meant he could be out of action until the early spring, and with Diogo Jota also missing, Klopp and Liverpool had to act.

Liverpool are still being linked with a move for a new midfielder in January too, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Sofyan Amrabat, Enzo Fernández and Ismael Bennacer all being linked in recent times.

Even with the move for Gakpo, there remains a need for a midfield to come in, with Bellingham the clear number one target.

There is some doubt over the level of interest in the other options, but with the Gakpo move pending and a potential move for a midfielder on the cards, how would Liverpool look to line up?

How Liverpool could look in their 4-3-3 formation:

Alisson

Alexander-Arnold – Konaté/Matip - Van Dijk - Robertson

Thiago - Fabinho/Amrabat - Henderson/Bellingham/Fernández

Salah - Núñez/Jota - Gakpo/Díaz
