'I was terrified for him!': Carragher could hardly believe what he saw one Liverpool player do tonight

Jamie Carragher felt ‘terrified’ watching Nat Phillips before a tackle on Erling Haaland tonight. The player come on as a Liverpool sub.

Jamie Carragher raved about Nat Phillips on Thursday evening after a moment in the 43rd minute at the Etihad. Liverpool brought on the centre-back as a replacement for James Milner, throwing him in against Erling Haaland.

And the Norwegian soon put Phillips to the test. Haaland sprinted into the box with the ball late in the first half, with only Phillips between him and the goal. ‘The Bolton Baresi’, as Carragher would call him, answered Manchester City’s star striker with a thunderous tackle – much to the delight of the former Liverpool star.

“What a tackle!” said Carragher, on commentary for Sky Sports. “Coming on, first challenge of the game, I was terrified for him!

“What a challenge that is. First time he’s been involved in the game, no doubt there’s a few nerves.

“Coming on against Erling Haaland – he’s now done a Cruyff turn against Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] in Milan, now he’s put in a challenge like Bobby Moore in his pomp against Haaland.”

Nat Phillips makes fantastic Erling Haaland

Phillips is always good for one moment of defensive magic and there it is! Jurgen Klopp took a chance in bringing him on, given the player’s lack of football this season. Admittedly, it was either him Calvin Ramsay as options, and the Scot hasn’t played much either.

Once again, though, Phillips showed that he can step up against elite forwards and deliver. He’s been doing it for a couple of years now – the Reds couldn’t really have a better fifth-choice centre-back.

And that’s the crazy thing here. Phillips is actually up for sale, with the Liverpool Echo claiming the Reds would accept £10m for him in January. That would be an absolute steal.

Will anyone take Liverpool up on that, though? They didn’t last summer, when the Reds supposedly put him up for sale. This time, we imagine someone will knock.
