Virgil van Dijk posts wordless reaction on Instagram after Lionel Messi wins the World Cup with Argentina
Virgil van Dijk reacted to Lionel Messi posting on Instagram after winning the World Cup. The Liverpool star faced Argentina in Qatar.
Argentina won the World Cup on Sunday afternoon, with Lionel Messi making it very difficult to argue that he isn’t the greatest footballer ever. With this, the no.10 has won the lot.
And Messi certainly stamped his mark on the game here. He scored Argentina’s penalty for the opener, was involved with the buildup for their second and then scored the third himself. All before netting a bizarrely nonchalant penalty to start the shoot-out.
Unsurprisingly, Messi took to Instagram to post a message for those watching around the world.
“I dreamed it so many times, I wanted it so much that I still can’t believe it……,” he wrote. Many thanks to my family, to all those who support me and also to all those who believed in us.
“We have shown once again that Argentines, when we fight together and united, are capable of achieving whatever we set our minds to. The merit belongs to this group, which is above the individualities, it is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the dream of all Argentines… We did it!!!
“Come on Argentina!! See you very soon.”
Van Dijk and Messi
Virgil van Dijk was amongst those who responded to the message. He kept it incredibly simple, posting an applause emoji – but it’s a little surprising that he posted anything.
The Netherlands met Argentina in the quarter-finals and played an incredibly heated fixture. Messi was critical of the Dutch attitude in a post-match interview and the behaviours during the penalty shoot-out in that fixture was weirdly aggressive.
Still, Van Dijk did take the time to congratulate Messi in his own little way. Clearly, the feelings from that game didn’t overshadow what is one of football’s most incredible moments.
Luis Díaz, who saw a South American side win the World Cup for the first time in 20 years, also sent a wordless response: two clapping emojis. Clearly, he loved it even more than Van Dijk.
