‘Appreciated by Liverpool’: Fabrizio Romano claims FSG stance on £106m player
Fabrizio Romano has reported on his YouTube channel that although Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are interested in Enzo Fernandez, club owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are not going to pay €120 million (£106 million) in transfer fees for the Benfica midfielder in the January transfer window.
The well-known and well-respected journalist has claimed that Liverpool have no plans to trigger Fernandez’s release clause of €120 million (£106 million).
Romano has added that Liverpool’s main midfield target is Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2023, but the Italian journalist has said that things could change regarding the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners and the 21-year-old, who won the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Argentina.
As reported by 90min, Chelsea are determined to bring Fernandez to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window, but the Blues are not able to agree on a fee with Benfica.
Liverpool stance on Enzo Fernandez
Romano said: “They are focusing on Jude Bellingham, but we know that Liverpool also had an interest in Enzo Fernandez, but the rumours from Portugal about Liverpool triggering the clause of €120 million (£106 million) were absolutely not true.
“Liverpool never wanted to invest €120 million (£106 million) in a midfielder in January because their main target is Jude Bellingham because, as of now, he is not available in January.
“Enzo is appreciated by Liverpool, but they never made that proposal and they never triggered that clause, but in the summer it could be a different story.”
Sensible
In our opinion, it is sensible for FSG not to sign Enzo Fernandez for €120 million (£106 million) for Liverpool in the January transfer window.
Yes, the 21-year-old is a very talented and promising young midfielder, but he joined Benfica from River Plate only in the summer of 2022.
You simply cannot pay €120 million (£106 million) on a young player who has not completed even a full season in Europe yet.
Yes, Chelsea seem keen on Fernandez, but Liverpool owners do not have the same financial might and do tend to spend their money more carefully.
