"Reminds you of Mascherano" - Journalist reacts as Liverpool eye January move for £40m star

Liverpool target Sofyan Amrabat ‘has got similarities’ to their former midfield star Javier Mascherano, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield following an outstanding World Cup with Morocco, although several other top sides are also said to be taking an interest in the Fiorentina ace.

Liverpool transfer news – Amrabat

Italian outlet La Repubblica have claimed that Liverpool, Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, and Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain are all in the running for Amrabat’s signature.

It’s believed that Fiorentina have placed a €45 million (£40m) price tag on their prized asset, who only has 18 months left on his current contract, although La Viola do have the option to extend his stay by a further year.

Liverpool have already brought in left-winger Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven this January but have also been credited with an interest in several central midfielders.

O’Rourke disclosed that he reckons Amrabat has resemblances to Mascherano, who made 139 appearances for Liverpool between January 20007 and the summer of 2010.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “He has got similarities to Mascherano, obviously with his energy and tenacity in midfield.

“He likes to make a tackle and get involved in things, so it reminds you of Mascherano in that respect.”
